Donald Richie, an American expatriate and a leading authority on Japanese film and culture, died Feb. 19 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 88.
 
A prolific author, Mr. Richie’s books gave overseas readers insights into Japanese film and culture. For many years, he helped edit “JAPANESE FILM,” which was published annually by UNIJAPAN.
